Narrated Abu Qatada:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, *”When you drink (water), do not breath in the vessel; and when you urinate, do not touch your penis with your right hand. And when you cleanse yourself after defecation, do not use your right hand.”*

Sahih al-Bukhari 5630

*NOTE 📝*

1. The Prophet ﷺ was the best of people in teaching and nurturing, and he taught his الأمة everything that benefits them. This includes teaching the etiquettes of eating, drinking, and relieving oneself.

2. Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani explained in his commentary of this hadith that this hadith is in the chapter on the prohibition of breathing into a drinking vessel, based on the hadith of Abu Qatadah. He stated that the Prophet ﷺ forbade breathing into a container while drinking, and additional narrations, such as those reported from Abdullah ibn Abbas in collections like Sunan Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, also prohibit blowing into it. These narrations reinforce the etiquette of drinking in a clean and considerate manner. – Fathul Baari, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani

3. Ibn Hajar continued his explanation and stated that the wisdom behind this prohibition is to prevent contamination or unpleasant changes to the drink. Breathing or blowing into a vessel may affect it due to odors from the mouth, leftover food particles, lack of oral cleanliness, or vapors from the stomach. Blowing is considered even more harmful than merely breathing in this regard. Overall, the guidance emphasizes hygiene, cleanliness, and respect for shared food and drink. – Fathul Baari, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani

*O Allah, all perfect praise is Yours, keep us firm upon what is lawful, and distance us from all that You have forbidden. Forgive our shortcomings and accept our efforts. Indeed, You are All-Hearing, Ever-Responsive. Ãmeen*

Grant us barakah in our businesses, success in our efforts, and ease in our struggles. Protect our families, guide our children, and strengthen our faith.

ربنا آتنا في الدنيا حسنة وفي الآخرة حسنة وقنا عذاب النار

Rabbana ātinā fid-dunyā ḥasanah wa fil-ākhirati ḥasanah wa qinā ‘adhāban-nār

(Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.)

Forgive our sins—those we know and those we do not know. Replace our worries with peace, our ضعف with strength, and our trials with elevation.

May Allah grant us good health, long life upon righteousness, and a beautiful end (ḥusn al-khātimah).
