The Lagos State Government has trained 80 retired public servants in biogas production, poultry, and rabbit farming as part of efforts to improve their financial stability and support productive life after retirement.
The two-day training programme was organised by the Office of the Head of Service and is aimed at equipping retirees with practical entrepreneurial skills that can help them generate income and remain economically active.

Speaking on the initiative, the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Sunkanmi Oyegbola, described the programme as a strategic intervention designed to improve the welfare and standard of living of retired officers.
He was represented by the Deputy Director of the Post Service Department, Bisi Rowland, who explained that the training is part of the state government’s broader commitment to supporting senior citizens.
“This training is a life-changing intervention aimed at equipping our retirees with relevant entrepreneurial skills,” he said. “Having served the state diligently, they deserve support that ensures a dignified and comfortable retirement.”

Oyegbola encouraged participants to take full advantage of the opportunity, especially the biogas production aspect, which he said offers both environmental and economic benefits through waste management and alternative energy generation.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting retired public servants, noting that they played a key role in building Lagos into what it is today.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Irene Enogwe, a retired teacher from the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), expressed gratitude to the state government for the initiative.

She said the training exposed her and other participants to new business opportunities they had not previously considered.
“This programme has introduced us to new ideas, especially biogas and livestock farming. It will help many of us remain financially independent,” she said.
Other participants also commended the government, saying the initiative would improve their quality of life and encourage active ageing.
The programme highlights Lagos State’s continued efforts to strengthen social support systems and promote inclusive economic empowerment for retirees.
