Minister of Works, David Umahi, explained that the bridge has deteriorated beyond repair and will undergo full reconstruction rather than partial rehabilitation. He confirmed that the project has been awarded to China Communications Construction Company.

The council also approved ₦24.89 billion for underwater repair works on the Third Mainland Bridge, another critical transport link in Lagos State.

In addition, the FEC approved rail infrastructure projects valued at $2.99 billion across three states, aimed at expanding Nigeria’s urban and intercity transport systems.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, said the rail projects include the Lagos Green Line Rail Phase One, the Kano Metro Rail, and the Kaduna Light Rail. He noted that these developments are part of broader efforts to improve transportation, ease road congestion, and support economic growth.

According to the government, the projects are expected to enhance connectivity between major cities, improve movement of goods and passengers, and create employment opportunities during construction and implementation.

Officials added that work on the projects will commence once final documentation and funding arrangements are concluded, as part of the administration’s wider push for large-scale infrastructure development.
