SCIENTISTS DEVELOP 3D IMPLANT THAT COULD CONTROL HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE WITHOUT DAILY DRUGS

Researchers at Penn State University have developed a tiny 3D-printed implant that could offer a new way to control high blood pressure without relying entirely on daily medication.

The device, known as CaroFlex, is made from a soft hydrogel material that closely mimics the flexibility of human tissue. Unlike traditional implants built with rigid metals and plastics, CaroFlex is designed to move naturally with the body. It can also attach to tissue without stitches, thanks to a built-in adhesive layer that helps reduce long-term damage to blood vessels.

According to Tao Zhou, an assistant professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State and lead researcher on the project, the implant works by targeting the body’s natural blood pressure regulation system, known as the baroreceptor reflex. The device is placed near the carotid sinus, an area in the neck that contains nerve endings responsible for monitoring blood pressure.

Once implanted, CaroFlex sends low-frequency electrical signals that stimulate these receptors and help regulate the nervous system’s response, potentially lowering blood pressure without the need for drugs.

Early tests carried out on animal models showed encouraging results. Researchers found that four out of five tested electrical frequencies reduced blood pressure by more than 15 percent on average. Tissue examinations conducted two weeks after implantation also showed no signs of damage or immune reaction, suggesting the material is biocompatible and safe for surrounding tissue.

The research team is now focused on improving the device and preparing it for future human clinical trials. If successful in humans, the technology could provide a major breakthrough for patients suffering from drug-resistant hypertension.

Zhou said the 3D-printing approach could also transform how medical bioelectronics are produced, allowing devices to be designed, manufactured and adapted much faster and more efficiently than with traditional methods.
