A young woman identified as Mary Habbila has died under unclear circumstances at the country residence of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The incident reportedly occurred on June 27, 2026, a day after Habbila and another woman, Anita Baski, who were both said to be from Kaduna State, arrived at the residence.
According to information from police sources, the two women were allegedly brought to the residence on June 26. Habbila was reportedly found unconscious the following morning.
A police officer attached to the minister’s security team, Jonathan Bawado, was said to have alerted medical personnel after the discovery. A doctor and an ambulance were reportedly dispatched to the residence, while the Divisional Police Officer of Ohaozara Police Division, CSP Tobechukwu Godwin, was informed of the incident.
Habbila’s body was later moved to a mortuary, with reports indicating that the identification tag attached to the body was handed over to the Ebonyi State Police Command.
The case has since been transferred from the Ohaozara Divisional Police Headquarters to the Ebonyi State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Abakaliki for further investigation.
Authorities have yet to disclose the cause of death, and it remains uncertain whether an autopsy has been carried out or if any criminal offence has been established.
It is also unclear whether Senator David Umahi was present at the residence when the incident occurred.
Attempts to obtain official comments from those connected to the matter were unsuccessful, while the Ebonyi State Police Command and the Federal Ministry of Works had not released any official statement as of the time of filing this report.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding Habbila’s death.
