A LOOK BACK AT KING CHARLES’S VISITS TO THE UNITED STATES OVER THE YEARS

King Charles III has built a decades-long relationship with the United States, having met nine American presidents from Dwight D. Eisenhower to Donald Trump. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, met 13 U.S. presidents during her reign, but Charles’s connection with America stretches back more than half a century.

His first visit to the White House came in July 1970, when he was just 21 years old and President Richard Nixon was in office. That early trip marked the beginning of what would become a long series of official and personal visits across the United States.

One of the most iconic moments tied to his early years in America came in 1985, when he visited Washington alongside Princess Diana. During a White House state dinner, Diana famously danced with Hollywood actor John Travolta — an image that remains one of the most recognizable royal moments of the 20th century.

Since then, Charles has returned to the United States 19 times in various capacities as Prince of Wales, engaging in diplomacy, charity work, environmental advocacy, and cultural exchanges across cities including Washington, New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans.

His engagements have ranged from meetings with U.S. presidents and first ladies to visits focused on disaster recovery, sustainability, and international cooperation. In 2005, he and the then-Duchess of Cornwall undertook a major goodwill tour of the U.S., including visits to Ground Zero in New York and recovery zones after Hurricane Katrina.

Now, in 2026, Charles is set to make history once again — this time as King. It will be his first state visit to the United States in his role as monarch, marking a new chapter in the long-standing “special relationship” between Britain and America.

The itinerary includes a state dinner at the White House, an address to the U.S. Congress, meetings with 9/11 first responders and families, and cultural engagements linked to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

From a teenage prince stepping off a Qantas flight in the 1960s to a reigning monarch on a formal state visit, King Charles’s journey with the United States reflects decades of diplomacy, symbolism, and enduring ties between both nations.
