The faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by National Chairman Nafiu Bala Gombe has dismissed claims that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, insisting that Professor Chris Uba has already been nominated as its flag bearer.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Gombe said Atiku is neither the party’s presidential candidate nor has he ever been adopted for the 2027 election.

He said the clarification was necessary to protect the integrity of the party and prevent misinformation ahead of the next general elections.
The faction also rejected the leadership of a group associated with former Senate President David Mark, describing it as an unauthorised faction that is not recognised by the party.
According to the statement, the group lacks the constitutional and legal authority to conduct party congresses, organise primary elections, or make decisions on behalf of the ADC, adding that it is not recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Gombe maintained that the ADC remains an independent political party and is not involved in any merger, coalition, or alliance with any other political platform.
He said the party had completed all internal processes in line with the ADC constitution and the Electoral Act 2026, leading to the emergence of Professor Chris Uba as its presidential candidate.
The faction expressed confidence in Uba’s leadership qualities, describing him as capable of providing the direction needed to address Nigeria’s challenges.
It also warned Atiku Abubakar against presenting himself as the ADC’s presidential candidate, insisting that the party would not allow its platform to be used for personal political ambitions.

The statement further noted that the ADC was established to provide credible leadership and national renewal, stressing that it would not become a vehicle for political opportunism.
The party vowed to explore all legal and constitutional options to protect its identity and prevent any unauthorised use of its name or structure.
It also dismissed recent allegations that there were attempts to stop the ADC from participating in the 2027 elections, describing such claims as unfounded and lacking credible evidence.

The faction reaffirmed its confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Nigeria’s electoral process, stating that it remains fully prepared for the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement, the ADC plans to field candidates for the presidency as well as other elective offices, including governorship, National Assembly, state assembly, and local government positions.
The party urged its members, supporters, stakeholders, security agencies, and the general public to disregard statements or directives issued by individuals or groups it described as unauthorised.
