‘BALOGUN NOT TO BLAME FOR USA LOSS’: COACH GARCIA DISMISSES CONTROVERSY AFTER BELGIUM WIN

Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia has dismissed suggestions that pre-match controversy involving Folarin Balogun influenced his side’s convincing 4-1 victory over the United States, insisting his players’ performance was the deciding factor.

Garcia praised Belgium’s discipline and tactical display, highlighting the contributions of defenders Nathan Ngoy and Brandon Mechele for limiting Balogun’s impact throughout the game. He also credited the team’s aggressive high-pressing approach, which led directly to two of their goals.

Charles De Ketelaere inspired Belgium with two first-half goals before Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku added to the tally after the break. Malik Tillman scored the United States’ only goal from a deflected free-kick.

Reflecting on the performance, Garcia described it as an outstanding night for Belgian football, commending his players for their determination, organization and commitment.

The Belgian coach also revealed that Balogun approached him after the final whistle in a gesture of sportsmanship. Garcia said the striker should not be held responsible for either the pre-match controversy or the outcome of the match.

“He came to speak with me after the game, and I appreciated that. He is not at fault, and I don’t blame him. I respect both the gesture and the player,” Garcia said.

He added that Belgium’s tactical plan worked perfectly, noting that winning possession high up the pitch played a key role in creating scoring opportunities.

The victory secures Belgium a place in the World Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Spain in Los Angeles, while the defeat brings the United States’ campaign on home soil to an end.
