The Nigerian Bar Association Anti-Corruption Committee and the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) have jointly called for faster and more consistent disciplinary action against lawyers accused of professional misconduct.

The two bodies raised concerns over delays in resolving complaints and inconsistencies in sanctions during a meeting in Abuja between representatives of both institutions, according to a statement by the NBA Anti-Corruption Committee.
They warned that slow disciplinary processes and uneven punishments risk weakening public trust in the legal system and the broader administration of justice.

The committee noted that maintaining ethical standards within the legal profession is essential for public confidence, adding that unresolved complaints and delayed investigations have become a major challenge to accountability.
It also highlighted concerns about irregular disciplinary outcomes, where similar cases of misconduct sometimes attract different levels of punishment.
Forms of misconduct cited include dishonesty, abuse of court processes, misrepresentation, breach of client trust, unethical financial dealings, and other professional violations.

In response, the LPDC acknowledged these concerns and said it remains committed to enforcing professional standards, but explained that it faces several operational challenges affecting its efficiency.
These challenges include inadequate hearing facilities, shortage of panel members, scheduling difficulties due to members’ professional commitments, and limited funding for investigations and administrative processes.
The LPDC stressed that despite these constraints, it continues to ensure fair hearings, where accused lawyers are given the opportunity to respond before any decision is taken.

The disciplinary body also explained that cases go through preliminary review stages to filter out unfounded petitions, though this process can sometimes contribute to delays in resolution.
Both institutions agreed on the need for stronger mentorship within the legal profession, improved ethics training, and sustained public awareness to reduce misconduct and strengthen accountability.
