SEVEN NIGERIAN STATES WITH GOLD DEPOSITS

Nigeria is steadily strengthening its position in Africa’s solid minerals industry, with gold emerging as one of the most important resources attracting exploration and investment across the country.

Although large-scale mining is still developing, multiple states already contain proven or suspected gold deposits, especially in areas where artisanal and small-scale mining has been active for years.

As part of broader efforts to reduce dependence on oil revenues, attention is increasingly shifting toward gold-rich regions, with both government agencies and private investors working to expand formal mining operations and improve regulation of the sector.

Key Nigerian states with notable gold deposits

1. Zamfara State
Zamfara is widely regarded as Nigeria’s leading gold-producing state. Significant deposits are found in areas such as Anka, Maru, and Bukkuyum, where small-scale mining has long been active. The sector remains heavily informal in many areas and has faced challenges such as illegal mining, environmental damage, and security concerns, prompting stronger regulatory actions in recent years.

2. Osun State
Osun has one of the longest histories of gold mining in Nigeria, with activity dating back to pre-colonial times. Areas like Ilesa, Ile-Ife, and Atakunmosa have confirmed gold presence, and modern surveys suggest commercially viable reserves. The state continues to draw interest from investors due to its relatively high-quality deposits.

3. Kaduna State
Kaduna has become a fast-growing hub for gold mining activity. Deposits in areas such as Birnin Gwari and Giwa have encouraged increased artisanal mining. Government interest is rising, especially around formalising operations and reducing illegal extraction.

4. Niger State
Niger State is highly prospective due to its large landmass and confirmed gold occurrences in places like Minna, Shiroro, and Paikoro. However, much of the sector remains underdeveloped, with strong potential for expansion if infrastructure and investment conditions improve.

5. Kebbi State
Kebbi has recorded gold occurrences in areas such as Fakai and Yauri. Mining activity is still largely artisanal, but regulatory agencies are increasing oversight and exploration efforts to encourage structured investment.

6. Kogi State
Kogi is known more for iron ore and coal, but it also contains gold deposits in areas like Okene, Kabba, and Lokoja. Its multi-mineral base makes it one of Nigeria’s more resource-diverse states, with ongoing exploration efforts.

7. Edo State
Edo is an emerging gold-bearing region in southern Nigeria, with traces found in places such as Igarra and Akoko-Edo. While still early in development, the state is gradually attracting investor interest due to its geological potential.

Overall, Nigeria’s gold sector is gaining momentum as exploration expands and more regions are identified as mineral-rich, pointing toward a broader shift in the country’s mining landscape.
