Real Madrid have been sanctioned for their fans’ behaviour during the second leg of their Champions League play-off against Manchester City.
UEFA, European football’s governing body, found Real Madrid supporters guilty of “discriminatory behaviour” during the club’s 3-1 home victory on February 19, which secured their place in the last 16.
However, neither television broadcasts nor journalists at the match reported any incidents at the time.
Citing a violation of Article 14 of UEFA’s disciplinary regulations—covering racism, discriminatory conduct, and propaganda—the organization fined Real Madrid €30,000 ($31,000).
Additionally, the club faces a suspended sanction that could see at least 500 seats at the Santiago Bernabeu closed if further violations occur within the next two years.
Several clubs and national teams, including Real’s Spanish rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, currently face similar suspended penalties for comparable infractions.
