FG MOVES TO DEPLOY AI-POWERED INTELLIGENCE SYSTEM AGAINST TERRORISM, PIRACY, ILLEGAL MINING

The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce an artificial intelligence-driven security system known as the Multi-domain Hybrid Intelligence Shield (HIS) to strengthen Nigeria’s efforts against terrorism, piracy, illegal mining and other security threats.

Minister of Defence Christopher Musa disclosed the development during an official visit to Monaco alongside senior ministry officials as part of ongoing discussions on the proposed HIS project.

The planned deployment comes as Nigeria continues to explore the use of digital technology and intelligence systems to improve national security operations and response mechanisms.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the project discussions involved MARSS UK Ltd and its Nigerian partner, MPS Mikopowers Ltd, with engagements focusing on advanced surveillance systems, command and control infrastructure, and integrated security technologies.

The ministry explained that the meetings featured technical demonstrations and strategic talks aimed at improving Nigeria’s defence architecture through modern intelligence and monitoring solutions.

Christopher Musa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising the Armed Forces through technology transfer, strategic partnerships, local capacity building and sustainable defence cooperation.

He stressed the need for Nigeria to strengthen indigenous operational capabilities while working with international partners to tackle evolving security threats such as terrorism, border crimes, piracy, illegal mining and drone-related attacks.

During the visit, the Nigerian delegation witnessed demonstrations of AI-powered threat detection systems, radar surveillance technology, drone interception mechanisms and integrated command and control platforms.

The proposed initiative also includes plans for national and regional command centres, mobile rapid-response units and a Centre of Excellence dedicated to simulation, training and doctrine development within Nigeria.

The ministry added that the engagements are expected to boost inter-agency coordination, strengthen national security operations and support the country’s broader defence modernisation agenda.

Nigeria has continued to battle multiple security challenges across different regions, including insurgency in the North-east, armed banditry in the North-west and North-central, separatist violence in the South-east, piracy in the Gulf of Guinea and illegal mining activities linked to criminal networks.

Authorities believe the adoption of advanced intelligence and surveillance technologies could improve early warning systems, operational coordination and response efficiency in tackling these threats nationwide.
