Kenya is mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a pivotal figure in the nation’s democratic struggle, who passed away at 80 in Kochi, India, due to cardiac arrest.
President William Ruto announced a seven-day national mourning period and a state funeral, with flags at half-mast across Kenya and its foreign missions. Describing Odinga as a “giant of democracy” and “fearless freedom fighter,” Ruto postponed all public engagements as a mark of respect.
A funeral committee, co-chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Odinga’s brother, Senator Oburu Odinga, will coordinate arrangements.
A delegation led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, including cabinet secretaries and Odinga’s widow, Mama Ida, traveled to India to repatriate his remains. Ruto praised Odinga’s legacy, noting his voice for the oppressed and his role in shaping Kenya’s history through courage and sacrifice.
