EKITI DECIDES: MASSIVE SECURITY DEPLOYMENT BEGINS AS INEC MOVES SENSITIVE ELECTION MATERIALS

With the Ekiti State governorship election fast approaching, electoral authorities, security agencies and civil society organisations have intensified preparations to ensure a peaceful and credible voting process across the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to commence the distribution of sensitive election materials to all 16 local government areas, marking a critical phase in the final countdown to the election.

Election officials confirmed that ballot papers, voter registers, Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices and other essential materials have been prepared for deployment. Non-sensitive materials had already been distributed ahead of the exercise.

To support logistics, the Nigerian Air Force successfully transported sensitive election materials from Abuja to designated locations, ensuring timely delivery for the Ekiti governorship poll and other scheduled by-elections across the country.

Security agencies have also activated extensive measures to maintain law and order before, during and after the election. The Nigeria Police Force has implemented a statewide security framework involving intelligence gathering, rapid response operations and collaboration with other security agencies.

Police authorities disclosed that special attention is being given to potential flashpoints, while measures have been put in place to prevent political violence, thuggery, cult-related activities and other security threats that could disrupt the electoral process.

Similarly, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) announced the deployment of 10,000 personnel drawn from multiple states and specialised tactical units. The agency stated that its officers would be strategically positioned across the state to safeguard voters, election officials, observers and critical infrastructure.

Efforts are also being made to promote inclusivity in the election. A civil society organisation focused on disability rights revealed plans to deploy election observers and sign language interpreters to polling units where persons with disabilities are expected to vote, ensuring greater accessibility and participation.

Meanwhile, preparations for possible post-election legal challenges have commenced following the constitution of the Ekiti State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal by the Court of Appeal.

Political activities have remained intense as candidates continue engaging voters across the state. The election is expected to attract significant national attention, with many observers viewing it as an important indicator ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a separate address, Governor Biodun Oyebanji highlighted the achievements of his administration and appealed to voters to support his re-election bid. He also called on political stakeholders, election officials and security agencies to maintain professionalism and ensure that the electoral process remains peaceful.

As the state enters the final stage of preparations, authorities have continued to assure residents of their commitment to delivering a transparent, secure and credible election.
