The Lagos State Police Command is facing criticism over allegations that police officers are being required to pay N5,000 each for the submission of bio-data forms as part of an administrative process.

The development has reportedly generated frustration among officers, especially those from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and above, who described the payment demand as unfair and unnecessary. Some officers questioned why they should personally finance what they believe should be a routine internal procedure.

According to insiders within the command, the money is being collected directly from personnel during the documentation exercise, sparking concerns about possible exploitation within the force.
The controversy comes months after the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, issued strict directives against extortion and misconduct among police personnel nationwide. The police chief had warned officers against illegal detention, interference in civil disputes, and other unethical practices damaging the image of the Nigeria Police Force.

A police communication circulated earlier this year also instructed officers to avoid unauthorised checkpoints, extorting motorists, intimidating civilians for money, and engaging in improper conduct while on duty.
The directive further stressed discipline, professionalism, and respect for members of the public, warning that officers found violating the rules would face disciplinary action.
