Several major political, economic, security, and international developments dominated headlines across Nigeria and beyond.

On the political scene, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, challenged Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to a public debate on the state of Nigeria’s road infrastructure after Obi shared photographs highlighting deteriorating roads across the country.

At the same time, Senate President Godswill Akpabio took a swipe at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the commissioning of a road project in Abuja, joking that he was unaware the opposition party was still active.

A separate controversy emerged after reports alleged that ₦1.3 billion was allocated in the 2026 federal budget to a non-existent organisation identified as the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the arrest of the alleged Director-General of the organisation, Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, who is accused of operating fraudulent activities from the Federal Secretariat and opening 34 fake bank accounts before his arrest.

Economic discussions also intensified after the World Bank approved a fresh $1.25 billion loan to support Nigeria’s capital market and digital transformation reforms, despite growing public concerns over the country’s rising debt burden.

In Osun State, public outrage followed allegations that newly recruited soldiers from the Army Depot in Osogbo invaded student hostels at Osun State University, where they were accused of assaulting students, sexually molesting female students, and stealing dozens of mobile phones.

The incident came as students at the university’s Ifetedo campus staged protests over the death of a 400-level Criminology student, Grace Osunlakin, blaming inadequate healthcare facilities on campus.

In Imo State, residents staged protests demanding the removal of Fulani herdsmen whom they accused of being linked to kidnapping activities in their communities.

Meanwhile, the family of kidnapped election official Barrister Ahmed Mohammed continues to seek his release after more than nine months in captivity, with his abductors reportedly demanding an additional ₦300 million despite receiving an earlier ransom payment.

Security challenges also persisted in Benue State, where gunmen abducted a senior pastor and two worshippers from a church, while separate attacks in Katsina-Ala claimed the lives of 10 people. In response to ongoing insecurity, the Federal Executive Council approved a ₦34.4 billion airstrip project in Gboko.

Outside Nigeria, Senegal’s National Assembly witnessed dramatic scenes after opposition lawmaker Abdou Mbow was forcibly removed from the podium by military police during a heated constitutional debate.

In the United States, two climbers drew widespread attention after scaling the Empire State Building to display a large peace banner.

The day also marked the 65th posthumous birthday of Princess Diana, with Prince William paying tribute by continuing his campaign against homelessness.
